Bollywood filmmakers and actors have long been the butt of jokes for having copied films and not to mention film posters from Hollywood. Poor Bollywood, it has made quite a name for itself, but while you share a laugh with your friends about how Heyy Baby is a rip-off of Three Men and A Baby, did you know that this was a two-way street? Many Hollywood directors have taken inspiration from none other than our desi films back home, like the ones mentioned below.
1. Darr (1993)-Fear (1996)
Even if we set aside the direct translation of the title for a moment, we simply cannot ignore how James Foley copied the epic sequence of Shahrukh Khan carving the name of K-K-K-Kiran on his chest.
2. Vicky Donor (2012)-Delivery Man (2013)
Remember the Vince Vaughn starrer film on sperm donation which created ripples in Hollywood in 2013? Apparently, Shoojit Sircar’s film on a hush-hush topic caught the attention of audiences worldwide!
3. Jab We Met (2007)-Leap Year (2010)
Leap Year is about a talkative girl who travels across the country to ask her boyfriend to marry her. On her way, she meets a man who turns out to be her knight in shining armour. Ring a bell, anyone?
4. Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya(2005)-Just Go With It(2011)
Replace Salman Khan with Adam Sandler and Sushmita Sen with Jennifer Anniston, and you wouldn’t be able to tell one film from the other.
5. A Wednesday(2008)-A Common Man(2013)
The official remake of the masterpiece called A Wednesday by Neeraj Pandey, A Common Man stars Ben Kingsley in the leading role.
So the next time you target Bollywood for being a copycat, maybe you’d like to keep these films in mind.
