Fashion in India is distinct from other countries around the world, mostly because of the mix of ethnic and western wear in every wardrobe. Sarees are the most famous Indian garment worldwide, known for their beauty and elegance. Many international celebrities have even worn them to red carpet events.
However, Indian fashion has its share of embarrassing trends that are best forgotten or hidden in the closet.
1. Gaudy Prints
We love bright and cheerful prints, but there’s a fine line between colourful and gaudy. I’m sure you’ve walked down the street or into a party and wondered why someone was wearing a curtain?!
2. Pointy Bodices
A trend started by Bollywood actresses of the 60s and 70s, ridiculous cone-shaped blouses, kurtas and tops certainly guarantee a second glance! However, other than international pop stars, fortunately, no one else dares to bring back this fashion.
3. Puff Sleeves
A trendy creation from the 80s and 90s, small puffs are still used on sleeves of blouses, kurtas and even western wear, but here’s hoping that the exaggerated balloon sleeves that make one look ready to take flight don’t ever make a comeback!
4. Bell Bottoms
Ultra-flared pants created a flutter in both men’s and women’s fashion in the 70s. Admittedly, these still look cool on leggy models, but for the average Indian – well I suppose one could always get away with saying one is helping to sweep the streets clean!
5. Larger-than-life Hairdos
Another style that yesteryear actresses sported both on and off screen, beehive-like switches and bouffant hair-dos come back in style every now and again. Honestly, don’t say that you haven’t seen one and wondered if the aliens have invaded earth!
