Capitalism is good for us because it breeds competition and brings out the best to us. But it can also be a hindrance sometimes. Like when a really good idea doesn’t have the right investor. And that’s exactly what happens many times to some seriously good movies. They do not manage to rope in the big producers and consequently go unnoticed on the box office.
So here’s a list of such movies that are really, really good but we have never heard of them!
9. Blue Umbrella
Vishal Bharadwaj takes Ruskin Bond’s brilliant novel by the same name and delivers what he does best – a mesmerizing mixture of emotions. Shreya Sharma excels as a young girl who searches for the culprit who stole her prized possession, a magnificent blue umbrella.
8. Being Cyrus
Boasting big names like Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Boman Irani and Naseeruddin Shah, it’s a wonder more people have not heard of this film. The story about an orphaned boy moving back to his home and discovering his family’s dark secrets, this is possibly Homi Adajania’s best work.
7. Stanley ka Dabba
Amole Gupte’s this story about a school-teacher who forces children to share their food, forbids one from entering the school until he brings his own Lunch-box, is heart warming in so many ways. Not the least of which are brilliant performances from his own son Partho Gupte and the wonderful Divya Dutta.
6. Dev.D
This modern take on the classic Devdas by Anurag Kashyap is as good as it gets from the genius director. Dark, real with a wicked sense of humor it is an apt representation of many of our culture’s quirks.
5. Firaaq
Nandita Das’ political thriller is set one month after the 2002 violence in Gujarat, and looks at the aftermath of its effects on the lives of everyday people. It claims to be based on “a thousand true stories”. This too boasts big names like Naseeruddin Shah, Tisca Chopra, Paresh Rawal and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
4. Manorama Six Feet Under
Second Abhay Deol starrer in our list, this is the tale of a suspended engineer and failed writer who is approached by a woman who suspects her husband of having an affair. Directed by Navdeep Singh, this thriller will set your heart racing like no other!
3. Udaan
Probably the most well known movie on our list, this Vikramaditya Motwane’s directional masterpiece will definitely make you cry. Simple story, well scripted dialogues and powerful acting by Rajat Barmecha and Ronit Roy. If you want some inspiration to pursue your dreams, go watch this film today!
2. Teen Deewarein
Another film with some big names of the industry. Juhi Chawla, Naseeruddin Shah, Jackie Shroff and Gulshan Grover star in this thriller directed by Nagesh Kukunoor. Just the tagline of the film is so tantalizing: Three Convicts, One Woman, One Truth!
1. Salaam Bombay!
One of Mira Nair’s earliest works, this film is one my personal favorites and one of the best tributes to the city of Bombay. The movie has Irrfan Khan and Nana Patekar. Need I say more?
