Movie sequels are worse than the original films. It’s a habit in Hollywood and everybody agrees on. But sometimes a “hero” rises from the ashes and hundreds of millions invested in him, breaking the box office.
It’s not easy to do it, because the first one had set the bar high. It’s like being the second child, you’ll always be compared and you need to be better to stand a chance of being loved the same.
1. Terminator II (1991) > Terminator I (1984)
Switching Arnie from the bad guy to the good robot that came from the future was decisive for Terminator II to overcome Terminator I. Although Arnold was back for another one, we think that II was the best one of the series. Relive the passion right now!
2. Batman: The Dark Knight (2008) > Batman: Begins (2005)
One character that is not Batman played an essential role in making this movie better than the first one. Joker spiced things up and made us not that serious while watching The Dark Knight. Why so serious?
3. Star Wars – Empire Strikes Back (1980) > Star Wars (1977)
Empire Strikes Back was the father of all Star Wars movies. Maybe because in this one Darth Vader offered us one of the greatest twists of all time: that he is Luke’s father. And Luke’s reaction was more than epic, directed to perfection by the special effects team.
4. The Godfather II (1974) >The Godfather (1972)
It may break your heart, but we chose II in favor of I. We think that both are great, yet the sequel impressed us with one damn good storyline. Or was it the presentation in which two timelines were clubbed into one movie. Marlon Brando had a younger version pplayed by the epic Robert Di Niro, while Al Pacino continued terrorizing innocents with his charming hatred.
5. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966) > A Fistful of Dollars (1964) &For a few Dollars More (1965)
Clint Eastwood looks like a badass in every movie he did, but in this one, he’s just the guy you don’t want to mess with. And thanks to a nice meme, the movie’s legacy lives even today.
6. Aliens (1986) > Alien (1979)
Although many consider the two to be two halves of a larger whole, we think that the character growth present in the sequel is what makes Aliens great and possible better than the first movie.
7. Toy Story 3 (2010) > Toy Story (1995) & Toy Story II (1999)
11 years we’ve waited for a third Toy Story to wash some disappointment caused by II. And, surprisingly for many, it was worth the wait. It has the laughs, magic and best of all the entertainment, while some new characters spice things up to make Toy Story 3 one of the most appreciated animated movies of all time.
