Too bad money can’t buy a brain.
Money doesn’t make you automatically happy. But even if it makes you sad, it is better to cry in a Ferrari than in a rented single bedroom flat, right? That is exactly what everybody thinks when they start out o their dream ventures, buy a lottery ticket or ace the race in their nine to five schedules.
Well, some of the guys below won’t agree with you. Millions of dollars only brought them misery and they ended up alone or worse. Intrigued? Scroll through their happy-sad stories below.
1. Gerald Muswagon – $10 million
Gerald wanted everybody else to like him. And when he won $10 million his wish came true. His friends took advantage of him and, without a penny to his name, he committed suicide in 2005.
2. David Lee Edwards – $27 million
David Lee won $27 million at the Powerball. Unfortunately for him, that didn’t make him happy in the long run. He spent $12 million in the first year and ended up dying alone, penniless.
3. Michael Carroll – $15 million
10 years ago Michael won the UK National Lottery. You would think that now he’s spending his time with models, no? Well, he’s now working at a biscuit factory to pay up his bills.
4. Jack Whittaker – $93 million
“I wish I’d torn that ticket up”, said no one ever. Well, maybe with the exception or Jack Whittaker. After he won, it’s like all his good luck turned against him. A series of legal issues and personal problems, like alcoholism and being robbed multiple times made him poor again.
5. Callie Rogers – $2.9 million
What do you do when you’re 16 and you win the UK lottery? Ensure your future? Apparently, buying drugs and booze seemed a better idea for Callie. YOLO!
6. IbiRoncailoli – $5 million
After she and her husband won the lottery, she gave $2 million to a secret child that she had with another man. Her husband found out and you can guess what happened. No, not a divorce. He poisoned her.
7. Billie Bob Harrell Jr. – $31 million
Billie thought in the end that the lottery winnings were the worst thing that happened to him. If we take into consideration that he lost his friends, divorced and then committed suicide, then we kind of agree.
8. Alex Toth – $13 million
Alex and his wife Rhoda did them all after they won: traveled, gambled and gave money to friends. In the end, the bill came and they went back up to living paycheck to paycheck.
9. Janite Lee – $18 million
Janite didn’t spent her money like the others, but spending her money on philanthropic efforts and political contributions got her bankrupt. At least she got to meet Bill Clinton!
10. Sharon Tirabassi – $10,5 million
When she got her money, Sharon went to Cancun. Now she’s taking the bus to work. A clearer freefall than Nicolas Cage’s career is right here.
